With Christmas coming up, it brings back fond memories of sitting around the Christmas tree, waiting to open up the presents that my parents had picked up for me. Like a lot of kids, I was smart and resourceful — more times than not, I knew of my parents’ secret hiding places, so I knew of at least some of the toys that they were picking up for me. One year they purchased a Nintendo gaming console, and I fully admit to sleeping with an Ultimate Warrior doll until I was about ten years old. We all remember the now vintage toys and games that we used to play with, and it’s a joy that we should want to share with our own children.
There are still some great classic games available on the market today. What’s more, though, is that because money has been tight for most of us, the demand for some of these vintage toys and games has increased. Instead of spending hundreds of dollars on a new gaming console, you can go with an older game or gaming system, and kids can get the same enjoyment out of them that you had several years ago.
One of the most infamous items on the market for kids in history has to be the Nintendo Entertainment System, also known as NES. The NES was all the rage in the mid-to-early 1980′s. It made a name for itself alongside very popular games, games that are still around today, such as The Legend of Zelda and Metroid. These games can still be enjoyed by the younger generation, and can even help to take you back to your childhood days.
Now, maybe the whole video game and gaming console gift idea has been overdone, and that’s totally understandable. However, purchasing vintage toys and games for the little ones does not have to be in the form if an electronic gadget — playing with Lego’s are a timeless pastime for kids of all ages. While Lego’s have certainly expanded over the years and have adapted to newer generations and their tastes, they are still a wonderful gift for a kid.
Speaking of timeless toys — bubbles are another classic item. Kids, and even adults, of all ages can enjoy the various shapes and sizes of the spherical wonders that float effortlessly through the air. Bubbles are available just about anywhere, and nowadays you can pickup bubbles at just about any retail location for a minimal investment.
In reality, when households nationwide are having trouble paying for mortgages and energy bills, saving a few pennies on games and toys during the holidays is a must for most of us. Vintage toys and games, from the NES to Lego’s, from an Etch-a-Sketch to the Lite Brite, and from Marbles to Cap Guns, are still relevant toys for our kids today. You do not have to spend a lot of money to make kids happy, and that is what really matters.
